Meet SSHO Training Requirements
This course can assist you in meeting your Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) training requirements.
According to the EM 385-1-1 Manual, an SSHO is a qualified representative that is responsible for on-site safety and health.
SSHOs assist the contractor's project management team with managing, communicating, implementing and enforcing compliance with the Accident Prevention Plan and other accepted safety and health documentation.
Contractors for federally funded projects are required to employ at least one SSHO at each jobsite. The primary SSHO is responsible for the overall management, implementation and enforcement of the contractor's safety and health program.
SSHOs are required to maintain their competencies with an additional eight hours of formal, online or self-study training on safety and health-related coursework each year.

Are these courses approved?
Our online EM 385-1-1 courses meet the training requirements of Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest (NAVFAC Southwest) and many other military and federal organizations.
However, the federal government and its agencies do not officially approve any courses related to EM-385-1-1, and no courses or certificates from any provider will include such approval.
Generally, we recommend that students check with their employer to ensure that the course meets specific training requirements. The certificate of completion issued upon course completion is from American Safety Council.
What's the difference between 16-, 24- and 40-hour EM 385-1-1 training?
All EM 385 courses are designed for military or government contractors who are required to meet EM 385-1-1 training standards. The number of training hours you need will vary depending on your role and your employer's training requirements.
The 16-hour EM 385-1-1 training applies to contractors working on military installations or Army Corps projects, or military or government employees who must comply with or enforce EM 385-1-1 standards.
The 24-hour EM 385-1-1 course is also appropriate for contractors and military or government employees. This course also satisfies 24 hours of refresher training that Collateral Duty Safety Officers (CDSOs) must complete every four years.
The 40-hour course is designed for managers, supervisors, contractors and construction personnel working on military contracts that must comply with EM 385-1-1 regulations and compliance standards. It covers a broad range of safety and health topics relevant to project supervisors or managers.
Is EM 385-1-1 training the same as OSHA training?
While both training programs cover similar topics, EM 385-1-1 safety requirements are more stringent than OSHA standards in some areas. The EM 385-1-1 course addresses some topics not covered in OSHA training, including accident prevention plans, program management and job site inspections.
Do I have to complete the EM 385-1-1 course in one sitting?
No. Recognizing that many professionals must work full-time while earning the certification or refreshing their knowledge, the online EM 385-1-1 course is available 24/7 and allows students to work at their own pace.
You do not need to finish the course in a single sitting. You can work whenever you want. When you log off, the system will save your progress so you can pick back up exactly where you left off.
What if I have questions while taking the course?
Access to a qualified course instructor is included with the course. You can email an instructor anytime to get answers to questions you have about the course content.
Does the course have a final exam?
Yes. Both courses require you to pass a final exam and a brief quiz at the end of each section. You must get a minimum score of 70% on the final exam and each quiz to earn your certificate.
When will I receive my course certificate?
Upon completion of the course and final exam, you can immediately download and print your certificate of completion.
Will my certificate expire?
No. While the certificate does not expire, check with your employer or the terms of your contract to see if further training is required. For example, SSHOs and other employees may be required to complete eight or more hours of continuing education or retraining annually.
What does the "EM" in EM 385-1-1 stand for?
EM is shorthand for Engineers Manual.
What does SSHO mean?
SSHO stands for Site Safety and Health Officer. The SSHO assists a contractor's project management team with managing, communicating, implementing and enforcing compliance with the contractor's Accident Prevention Plan and other required safety and health documentation.
